The Bosc Monitor, also known as the Savannah Monitor (Varanus exanthematicus) is a large bodied monitor from Eastern and Northern Africa. An adult Bosc Monitor can exceed five feet in length, although three to four foot is more average. They can weigh up to 2kg and are prone to obesity in captivity, with an almost unrivalled appetite.
Chinese Water Dragons originate from Thailand, southern China, and the surrounding area. They can be handled, though tend to be skittish and will need taming, and feed on both vegetation and live insects. Although they are moderate in body size their tail adds a lot of length and they are very active, so require a large, arboreal enclosure that they can run around and actively climb in.
Crested Geckos are small, arboreal lizards native to New Caledonia. They are easy to care for and have become popular pets due to their gentle nature, low-maintenance needs, and variety of color patterns. These geckos are omnivorous, feeding on insects and fruit-based diets. In captivity, they can live up to 15-20 years with proper care.
Blue Tongue Skinks are a group of large, ground-dwelling lizards native to Australia and parts of Indonesia. They are easily recognized by their broad bodies, short limbs, and, most notably, their vibrant blue tongues, which they display as a defense mechanism to scare off predators. Blue Tongue Skinks are hardy creatures that can live up to 20 years in captivity with proper care.
The Bearded Dragon is a popular species of lizard native to Australia, known for its distinctive “beard” of spiny skin under its throat, which puffs up as a defense mechanism. These reptiles are hardy and docile, making them great pets for beginners.
The green basilisk is a long and thin lizard from tropical Central America. It is generally green or green/blue with dark stripes towards the back of the tail and top of the abdomen. Males of the species are generally larger and have large plumes on the head, running along the spine and down the tail.
Stowaway Geckos are not to be handled. The Stowaway geckos we get here at the RSPCA Reptile Rescue are wild animals. They have accidentally come to us when hiding in peoples luggage when on returning from holidays.
Due to these geckos being wild animals we want to provide them a stress free life with the most up to date care.
Rankin’s Dragons are often overlooked in favour of their Bearded Dragon relatives which are more common and well known (check out our Bearded Dragon guide if you’re interested). In nature, they inhabit the arid, rocky regions of Australia.
Moorish geckoes are found in North Africa and Europe. Here they can be found in the following countries – Algeria; Croatia; Egypt; France; Greece; Italy; Libya; Morocco; Portugal; Slovenia; Spain; Tunisia and Western Sahara. Their presence in Morocco is currently uncertain.
The leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) is a small to medium-sized, nocturnal lizard native to arid regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, northwestern India, and parts of Iran. They are popular pets due to their docile nature, ease of care, and distinct spotted appearance, which resembles the coat of a leopard.
